NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Description.

The NRA Basic Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course is designed to prepare experienced shooters to perform the primary duties of an RSO. RSOs ensure that users of a range follow a range of regulations to reduce property damage and personal injury. RSOs often have the responsibility to take action when circumstances require it. The RSO is the range’s official on the firing line to ensure safety and to help shooters.

EXPECTATIONS AND OUTCOMES


To develop NRA Certified Range Safety Officers with

 the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential

 to organize, conduct, and supervise safe 

shooting activities and range operations. 


Students will receive feedback on the practical 

exercises conducted during the course. 

 

There is a short written test in the lesson 

material at the end of the course. 


A 90% score is required to obtain certification.

  • The (RSO) is a critical component of the safe operation of the firing range.
  • The (RSO) enforces safe firearm handling.
  • RSOs must pay acute attention to the range area while maintaining a strong mental focus on safety, resulting in a positive customer experience. 
  • Analyze, predict, and preempt situations to ensure safe training is conducted. 
  • Developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. 
  • You must pass the RSO course to become an NRA Range Safety Officer.
  • Demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, 
  • conducting and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. 
  • The course covers different firearm types, actions, parts, and their operation, how to manage emergency procedures, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, ammunition types, 
  • storage options and proper care & maintenance, and above all, 
  • safety on the range and roles and responsibilities are also covered. 

The (RSO) Primary Responsibilities

  • The primary duty of a Range Safety Officer is to organize, conduct, and supervise safe range activities and range operations for all customers at all times. 
  • To ensure safety on the range, observe all shooters and respectfully but immediately cease any behavior that could be considered unsafe. 
  • Safely control the firing line while live fire is in progress.
  • Must possess observation skills and the ability to identify potential safety issues.
  • Identify unsafe acts and take immediate corrective action.
  • Must be observant and possess the ability to make quick, accurate decisions
  • Must be able to use tact and be respectful when correcting unsafe behavior
  • Ensure strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

Full Job Description

While on the range

  • Create and maintain a safe shooting environment for the shooters. 
  • Must have knowledge of and experience with handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
  • Provide detailed safety briefings to all shooters who are new to the Alamo
  • Provide expert / detailed guidance for shooters who are unfamiliar with a firearm
  • Patrol the range enforcing the company safety rules/regulations
  • Maintain the Alamo’s standards of cleanliness on the range (brass, targets, etc.)
  • Maintain a professional image and demeanor at all times
  • Provide basic marksmanship instruction to all attendees who require it

While working behind the counter

  • Process customers and supply them with all necessary safety equipment and supplies.
  • Disposing of money deposits in the company drop box at the end of every night
  • Answering phones and recording messages in voicemail logbook
  • Following proper intaking procedures for weapons coming in for gunsmithing services
  • Restocking range ammunition and targets
  • Keeping the range counter and safety gear clean and organized at all times
  • Monitoring range AC units for any system failures
  • Be a point of contact for IT companies if a POS system stops working.

Possible jobs throughout the store

  • Assisting customers on the sales floor with firearm and accessories purchases
  • Restocking ammo on the sales floor
  • Restocking targets from storage behind the Presidential range to the warehouse
  • Restocking the café fridges
  • Organizing the supply closet and taking inventory of all equipment
  • Collecting any trash along the outside of the building

Range maintenance jobs

  • Maintaining OSHA standards with proper PPE and safety equipment
  • Collecting all brass and debris on the ranges every night
  • Vacuuming the ranges, traps, and troughs every weekend
  • Disposing of all trash and recycling from the ranges at the end of the day
  • Making sure the area for debris disposal is cleaned and organized after the ranges have been cleaned
  • Inspect the ranges before opening for any damages or system failures
  • Paint the range walls, ceilings, traps, and floors
  • Sealing and repainting of the soundproofing on the range
  • Replace any broken lightbulbs
  • Provide regular maintenance on all target systems to ensure they are working correctly and fix any worn or broken parts (snapped wires, electrical shorts, replacing parts)
  • Conducting opening, mid-day, and closing procedures to ensure the DCU systems are functioning properly
  • Testing the auger to ensure the lead is being pushed into the barrels and not clogging
  • Checking lead barrel levels and replacing barrels if needed
  • Chipping away the built-up lead in the deceleration chamber.
  • Replacing AC unit filters
  • Troubleshooting the electrical system if a range loses power or a trip in the breaker


Pay Rates From $15.00 to $50.00 an hour on average
